How VA ratings actually combine

The VA does not add ratings linearly. Instead, each additional rating reduces the remaining healthy portion of the veteran. Two 50% ratings combine to 75%, not 100%.

Sort all ratings from highest to lowest.
Start with 100% efficiency.
For each rating, multiply remaining efficiency by (1 − r/100).
Subtract final efficiency from 100.
Round to the nearest 10% (VA always rounds up at the combined step).

The bilateral factor

When both arms, both legs, or paired hands/feet carry ratings, §4.26 adds a 10% bonus to the combined bilateral value before that value is mixed with non-bilateral ratings.

Example: 10% right knee + 10% left knee = combined 19% → ×1.10 = 20.9% → rounded to 20% bilateral, which is then combined with any other ratings.

Common mistakes

✗ Adding percentages directly (50 + 50 = 100, not 75).
✗ Forgetting the bilateral factor on paired limbs.
✗ Rounding each condition instead of the final combined value.
✗ Counting 0% ratings — they don't enter the formula.
