How SSDI is calculated

SSDI uses the same PIA formula as retirement benefits, but applied to your earnings up to disability onset (rather than up to retirement age).

PIA = 0.90 × AIME[0..$1,174]
    + 0.32 × AIME[$1,174..$7,078]
    + 0.15 × AIME[> $7,078]

SSDI vs SSI

SSDI is based on your work history (must have earned 20 quarters in the last 10 years). SSI is need-based and has a 2024 maximum of $943/mo individual. They are different programs even though both are run by SSA.
